Essential Oils |
Aroma Therapy or "treatment by fragrance", is based
on the use of "essential oils" from plants.
These essentials oil are the most potent and concentrated
extracts of various parts of flowers, fruits, leaves, spices,
roots, and woods (generally distilled
by steam or water).
Essential oils are present in very small quantities,
sometimes as little as .01%. For example, it would take at least
10 buckets of orange blossoms to extract a mere teaspoonful of
neroli essential oil
|
Essential oils are volatile by nature and tend
to evaporate or change to vapor quickly when exposed to air.
They are soluble in fatty/vegetable oils,
also called carrier oils. Diluting an
essential oil in a carrier oil is an excellent
way to facilitate safe use of the essential oil.
Carrier and essential oils also
compliment each other's effects in a synergistic
way. They are nourishing and easily absorbed by the skin.
|
When essential oils are applied to the skin in body massage
( usually diluted into a carrier oil) they are
completely absorbed and penetrate deeply into the tissues,
interstitial fluid and bloodstream.
They are carried by the bloodstream to specific organs
and systems of the body where they have
the ability to enhance the natural functions of these organs.
One
of the most important therapeutic characteristics of the essential
oils is that they can enter blood stream of human body
very quickly upon application to the skin or by smell,
and do not have to go through the lengthy process of digestion,
like in case of medicines taken orally.
|
Essential oils, have a powerful effect through our sense
of smell.
Simply by inhalation, essential oils illicit an immediate olfactory
response and they are readily absorbed into the
bloodstream.
Smell
(olfaction) is perhaps the most powerful of our five senses.
The olfactory membrane is the only place in the human
body where the central nervous system is exposed and in direct
contact with the environment.
When an olfactory receptor cell is stimulated, an impulse travels
along the olfactory nerve to the limbic portion of the brain (sometimes
referred to as the reptilian or old brain) where memory, hunger,
sexual response or emotion is evoked. Before consciously knowing,
we are in contact with an aroma,
our subconscious mind has already received and reacted to it.

| Infused
Oils |
An infused oil consists of a carrier oil that has been permeated
(“infused”) with one or more herbs. Theretofore, infused
oils contain therapeutic properties of both the carrier oil and
the herbs that were infused into the oil.
|
Rose hip Seed
Evening
Primrose
Calendula Oil
|
Some plants do
not have much essential oil contained in them, and in such cases
it is rare or impossible to find an essential oil for that plant
species. However, infusing the herb into a carrier oil, can be
a suitable way to still use the herb for aroma therapy purposes.

| Oleoresin |
Oleoresin represents the 'true essence of the spice' and consists
of the volatile essential oil and the nonvolatile resinous fraction
containing the taste components and pigments. Oleoresin can replace
spice powder in food and flavor formulations without impairing
any flavor characteristics.

Oleoresins
are free from physical impurities and extraneous matter, pathogens
and microbiological contaminants. These are standardized products
in which active ingredients/color, flavor, and physical properties
are standardized. They facilitate consistency in end-use, which
is not always possible in raw spices and versatility easy of use.
The concentrated extract can be diluted to varying strengths to
meet required end-use flavor, co lour, taste, etc
